First Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Synod of Living Waters and the Presbytery of the Mid-South.
Greetings from Pastor Ted:
Beginning September 13th, 2015, I intend to start a sermon series that will cover the basics of Presbyterian belief. I will be guided by The Brief Statement of Faith adopted by the PC (USA) at the general assembly held in 1991.
The Outline for this faith statement is taken from 2 Corinthians 13:14 (or 13;13. My favorite translation, the NRSV only has 13 verses in 2 Cor 13) which reads, "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you."
The working titles and the most likely dates for the sermons in this series are:
Sept 13 The Grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ
Sept 20 The Love of God
Sept 27 The Fellowship of the Holy Spirit
Oct 4 Claimed in the Waters of Baptism
Oct 11 Fed with the Bread and The Cup
Oct 18 Called to Ministries of the Church
Oct 25 Nothing Can Separate us From the Love of God
Nov 1 The Meaning of Worship
Nov 8 The Act of Worship
For those of you who grew up Presbyterian, attended communicants training and were confirmed, this will hopefully remind you of some things you have forgotten. Others of you are like me. You grew up in a different tradition, and have been led by God's Spirit to become a part of the Presbyterian family. For us, some of the material covered is either a part of the reason we feel at home here or it may be material that we still have questions about.
I will supply copies of The Brief Statement of Faith as a reference, during this time, but it can be found online here
. Also, if you need to miss a Sunday, be aware that most all sermons are uploaded to the church web site. The web address for the web site is fpcsomer.org
. I look forward to worshiping with you in the weeks ahead.
Blessings and Peace,
Timothy E. (Ted) Dennis, Pastor
